Laidback Bike Report
США
Добавлен 8 авг 2006
The Laidback Bike Report is about people. Bent riders ride interesting bikes, go to interesting places and have interesting stories. That's the basis of our monthly webcast. Sure, we'll talk about products and have tips and tricks for you but each month our show is built around an interview. We'll continue to get the personal side from folks adventure riding around the world. We will delve into the minds of industry leaders, shop owners, and event organizers who are hoping to attract your attention with their wares. We'll get them to turn their cameras around and show us their surroundings, facilities, or latest prototype. This is how we hope to make our show worthy of your precious time.
We do this broadcast live so that you can have your comments made and questions answered on the spot. This is an interactive endeavor and is not complete without audience participation. Please join us every month as we bring you our very best attempt at the Laidback Bike Report

Neodrives Hub Motors-Cycle Con 2023 Booth Interview
I've been designing and building electric vehicles for 20 years. The ElectroVelo, my thumbnail image Was completed in 2011 and I still use it to this day. I have a range of 260 km pure electric, more if I pedal. The number one thing to consider when designing an electrical vehicle for the road is the law. In most places in North America 4 wheels is not allowed unless it's a mobility scooter. There must be pedals and that must be speed restricted. As for financing for production that's difficult. Most people in North America still consider anything that doesn't have a large energy footprint to be a toy. For those who want or need such transportation it's often beyond their ability to afford. Government programs are trash and in my opinion are for those builders, producing inferior products. All the best to the young woman trying to make a difference. My advice is design a really good vehicle for yourself that is easy to repair and upgrade. Use it all the time and provide a positive example for others. We are fully entrenched in car culture and that's not going to change anytime soon.
Quadvelo😮 BELLISSIMA ❤ BELLISSIMA ❤ BELLISSIMA SUPER FOOOOOORTE. Io vivo in bicicletta e......ne vorrei una! Questa, tra pioggia e gelo, risolverebbe tanti problemi della mia vita....e ho tanti problemi!!!!! BRAVISSIMI👏👏🥇👍👏👏🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
looks like a great solution
Got to see one here today in action and they are a great solution, Unless you happen to ride an Azub tifly than its a no go. was told because of the titanium leaf springs being an issue..
Need trunnion mounts, a lot more short travel xc shock options if they move to trunnion mounting, anyone who still want to use eyelets can get an adapter.
Sadly Dave of ar-3 has shutdown his business very shortly after this review... I have no way of contacting him about the ar-3... 😢 And I tried for a year...I can't get any information about why except retirement...
I loved the Trident Trikes Odyssey. Perhaps someday I'll actually be able to purchase one. It would have been nice to see the process of folding and unfolding the Odyssey. Best wishes. David D. 🖖
For cyclists, for inclement weather, this is nice. If you are targeting 25mph, you will never get car drivers to adopt this mode of transportation. Even with my smart fortwo or even the much bigger Fiat 500, so many people look at me like I have a death wish, and will never get into the car with me.
Never mind, you’ve just gone inefficient regenerative breaking is to save where and tear on your mechanical brakes. The electricity you save is just a tiny bonus.
Fantastic initiative from a very smart girl. Hope she can bring successfully forward this very interesting project!
Has the Laidback Bike Report reached out to the Pebl2.0 people at Better Bike to see where they are in their quest to produce an American solution to micromobility?
I think Amara is the only velomobile type maker that has done any wind tunnel work.
Wind tunnel work was also done on the original Quest and Milan SL
I-Cycle Electric Bike Company has been following Elecy for more than a year now and we think that this is a terrific project that could really move velomobiles out of the sport enthusiast niche and into the mainstream, which would be a big boost for more mainstream velomobile acceptance. Keep pushing and we wish Tamara the best of luck and good fortune.
I hope Tamara knows about Katanga's Velion and the Podbike. Given this is such a small market space I'd hope those who are working here could help one another.
She specifically talks about the advantage she sees for the Elecy vs the Podbike in the interview 😊
Tamara is a very intelligent and a view for human powered vehicles but it will come down to affordability! Wish her well for the future
Excelente projeto! Garota genial e ótimo entrevistador! Também estou quebrando a cabeça aqui no Brasil, desenvolvendo o Harpia e um quadriciclo!
What is that expanding mesh called? I really want to learn more about it but having trouble finding examples. It's very interesting
I'm sure Leo can point you in the right direction. Contact him here: leovisscherkorver@gmail.com
I have one of these and they're awesome!
Et le vm45 de Katanga : pas intéressant ?
Hi Pierre-The VM45 is now the Velion. We find it most interesting and that's why we spent so much time with Stephane talking about it😊 You just need to watch this year's Spezi interview (ruclips.net/video/SOW44ZpZH1s/видео.html )and not last year's😉
Varitrike: Your quickest, fastest ride.
Recycled pallet wood peeled ply to built wood composites for bikes without toxic chemicals or adhesives, and hemp spokes and you can dump all that metal garbage monetised in that horror fair, also wooden frame on fabric velomobiles with fine hemp fabric, weighing 15% less than toxic nanoplastic carbon fiber shells
While the sustainability, economic benefits, strength and durability of hemp spokes make them an interesting and *really* attractive concept, the reality is that there are a lot of challenges to go through before major use and acceptance happens - at least in use as cycling spokes: Moisture Sensitivity: Hemp fibers are susceptible to moisture, which can weaken the material over time if not properly treated and sealed . Inconsistent Quality: The quality of natural fibers can vary, leading to inconsistencies in the performance of hemp spokes . Processing Complexity: Converting hemp fibers into a material suitable for bicycle spokes requires advanced manufacturing processes, which may be more complex and costly compared to traditional materials . Limited Knowledge: The use of hemp in high-stress applications like bicycle spokes is relatively new, and there is limited research and development compared to traditional materials . Higher Initial Costs: Hemp composites can be more expensive to produce initially, due to the need for specialized processing and treatment . Regulatory Hurdles: There may be regulatory challenges associated with the use of hemp in consumer products, depending on the region . Market Resistance: Consumers and manufacturers might be hesitant to adopt new materials without substantial evidence of long-term performance and reliability .
If you want to go that way, I think it's better to use bamboo as a frame material, with a air and water tight ventile cotton cloth stretched over the frame,, like a rigid airship. But you will still need industry for all the steel components and the bearings for the wheels and the rim, so might as well use steel spokes. If you go down this train of thought you might as well ditch the concept of bicycle all together and go back to all wooden man or animal pulled wheel wagons. The only true sustainable method. And I am not saying that is a bad idea.
4:45 Albert Einstein
Yes, Albert Einstein's collaboration with Luke at Quadvelo is being hushed up by the company. We were lucky to inadvertently get a shot of the genius at the booth.
I'm curious what kind of efficiency Katanga gets out of their chainless Pony4 (1:17:45)
1:29:38 : I think Einstein is really interested in the quad velo.
Always good to hear about my favorite velomobile maker! 😃
Excellent 😊😊
thanks Gary.
Laidback bike report, the best channel about modern bicycles in the world!
Thank you, Paulo!
Nice Interview ! When he new Bülk is wrapped with a folie, I ask my self it is not possible to wrap a Velomobile Ur-Form , or to wrap a Wheel-Box-Model....instead to ...... the form and with less drag on the form...
They are way behind on orders and keep up with demand ! Why dont they offer part assembled or kit form 🤔
Based on the grin on Gary's face, I think that one-arm lift was pre-planned. 😉
This should just be registered as l6e and then it would be fine. It doesn't even have a chain, that's why it's limited to 250w contrary to actual ebikes that are actually hybrid and can have human power plus 250w. And as far as I know the regulations for EU existed before they designed this colossal machine. I mean, I'm all for increasing the wattage somewhat and increasing top speed somewhat too, but designing something heavily and with a lack of power right from the start and expect the EU to change their laws just to make this "concept" viable while the rest of the VM market makes it work even without electric assist ... It seems odd. And claiming these things couldn't be registered as l6e ... leiba already does it and they do it successfully.
A beautiful machine, it looks to be well engineered and aerodynamic. How do they deal with solar heating from the large amount of clear canopy surface?
In Norway we enjoy to be grilled in the sun
@@legordan Well done, medium or rare?
@@olsonspeed well done
The Brooks boom bag on the "cream" looks interesting. I have a TerraCycle frame pump bag, but that top bag would be ideal.
I sit in the Snoek L and I think it is a special Velomobile for riding in the flat....
I’m amused that Theo thinks that weight is something special. All the Velomobile World produced Models are in that range. The Bülk is also 24kg. Even the fiberglass 4More is only 29kg, and that’s a budget model.
I think 24 kg and 2m (6'-6") rider capability is pretty impressive. The Bülk looks impressive too. It's nice to have choices.
@@anim8ted923 yes. The Snoek L and A9.2 both are that weight and fit 2m riders. I have 1.96m clients that could squeeze into the Bülk, but not 2m. Some really great options on the market now.
the thing with weight is that can be advantage or disadvantage depending on the circumstances it accelrates faster but also decelerate quicker so you need more force to keep up it wont roll that far like a heavier vehicle, but will also brake longer. going downhill will make you faster the more you weight. you can try it by going to groceries or adding extra weight going downhill and see how far you roll compared to going empty. uphill you loose lots of energy being heavy...however you could use momentum and build up speed before going uphill. most important is aerodynamic drag and snoek l haz the smallest frontal area 130 watts at 31mph df xl 140 watts bulk 150 watts.
super light.
All the models from Velomobile World are that weight. Soem are even lighter. The W9 I had was 22kg. The Bülk is 24-25kg. The only heavier models are the new 4More at 29kg and the QV which is well over 30kg.
Dutch people are really tall so no wonder this new bigger snoek sells well
wow, beautiful light velo. The QV is incredible too.
24 kilo is amazing. Of course that's without the basket.
Most models are 24kg. The Alphas are often 22-23kg. The Bülk is 24kg as well. If it’s produced at Velomobile World, it’s going to be 23-25kg. They know how to build light and stiff. Even the fiberglass 4More is 29kg.
Unfortunately most of the 50 US states have issue with 4 wheels like that.
Looks neat and wish them well for the future 😊
Good idea, but they need to hire a better designer to make it attractive. Otherwise it will not sell.
This is one of the very few velocars that actually reach series production, and stays in production and sells. I think they something right.
? It looks great.
Handwheels no see
yes but its made in taiwan but bmine aint

Creativity, so many new and unique designs.
I like this shade of red. To those complaining about the lack of innovation, the new CEO did say they have a lot of new exciting stuff coming.
Nobody cares your employee owned, what new products do you have. How about an improved suspension, an improved seat, ew accessories. Come on man.
Nice trike and something different
I am a rower and interested in the Varibikes. However, it is not rowing. I am not sure if I want the rotational movement for my shoulders. Will keep it mind though. I wish them the best.
A new color. That's it? And a FAT trike from 10 years ago. And a guy who sold cars now is boss. We know ICE makes great trikes. But one would wish they came up with something special. Like a solar trike? Or cargo? Something to show they love cycling. But nope. New CEO. And new color. Market driven. Oh oh.
Agree with you but not one trike manufacturer has anything new??? All the same apart from HP Velotechnik with a delta trike, can't believe not one trike fitted with pedal generator to do away with long drive chain ??
@@TheWelshman50 ICE sells a lot of trikes. I think they are obligated to come with something really fun and not commercial to Spezi. Some experiment or whatever. But maybe it's not all sunshine for the company? There's a saying in business, if you stand still you go backwards. There must always be progress, something new.
